BARC (Baba Atomic Research Centre) has developed an indigenous portable high volume air sampler has been designed, fabricated and tested by, Indira Gandhi Centre for Atomic Research, DAE. Portable high volume air samplers are employed to collect the airborne particulates in a glass fibre filter paper. After collection, the filter paper is analysed for required sample of interest.
The portable high volume air sampler is light-weight and made of Fibre Reinforced Plastic (FRP). It is a mains-operated instrument. The air sampler has an inbuilt embedded controller to start, stop, log and to calculate the total volume of air sampled. The ambient air is sucked at a desired flow rate up to 2800 lpm and made to pass through a glass fibre filter paper for a given duration of time.
Some of the key features include wireless Remote for safer operation, on/off Timer, GPS / Location, flow Controller & data logging.
Wireless Remote: With the remote device the air sampler can be operated within 20m radius. The remote connects to the embedded controller in the air sampler through Bluetooth connectivity.
Timer: The remote has an inbuilt start, stop and pause timer, with which the sampler can be operated for desired time interval.
Flow: It has an inbuilt flow indicator which displays the current flow rate and with the help of embedded controller the data is also shown and logged in the remote unit
Accumulated Flow: It logs the flow for the set time and calculates the accumulated flow automatically using a logarithm which is coded in the remote
GPS / Location: The remote has a GPS which logs approximate coordinates when the sample is taken. This feature would be helpful when the sampling is done in outdoor environments
Flow Controller: It has a flow controller with a precise flow from 40 to 100 CFM [1100 to 2800 lpm] can be achieved precisely
Data Logging: It has a data logging feature which logs date, time, set timer, logging time, flow, location and accumulated flow for the set time
This product can be used by pollution control boards for collection of suspended particulate matter in monitoring environmental pollution, by industries discharging particulate effluents, for the collection of samples for the purpose of monitoring, and be used in nuclear installations in DAE for the collection of air samples to estimate air-borne radioactivity levels.
