The Baba Atomic Research Centre (BARC) has developed a unique and special kind of an Engineered Valve less Transparent face Mask (EVTFM) using fully indigenously developed glass filter media (HEPA). EVTFM is a high filtration efficiency face mask having features like comfortable breathing, cost effective; transparency, modular design, reusable etc. are in huge demand due to Covid-19 pandemic.

The situation arisen due to Covid-19 has provided a method to avoid contagious disease transmissions. It has been observed that usage of face masks has helped to contain the spread of the disease. Engineered Valveless Transparent Face Mask was designed and developed to address the limitations of normal face mask in term of reusability, comfort and reliability and transparency help recognition of face. As a mandate of Atmanirbhar Bharat, an engineered valveless transparent face mask (EVTFM) using fully indigenous glass fiber (HEPA) filter media, developed at BARC. EVTFM is having special and unique type of design with several implicit advantages.

In terms of reliability, the life of filter cartridge is longer and not required frequent replacement. This cartridge is replaceable, avoiding throwing whole mask. This prevents the over generating the waste due to disposal of mask. In quality, the EVTFM is at par with the various international and National standards set by different agencies.

The filter media used in EVTFM is indigenously developed by BARC with low breathing resistance and high particulate efficiency ≥ 99.97% for 0.3 micron particle size. The filter media is made of glass fiber, which is water and oil repellent.

Some of its applications include;

  • Suitable for front line workers/ medical professionals and other critical patients.
  • Useful for safe breathing in contaminated & polluted air environment like mining /automobile and nuclear industry.
  • Very useful in preventing the spread of contagious diseases like corona, flu, tuberculosis etc.
  • Suitable for fire services professionals and traffic police.
