The Central Leather Research Institute of CSIR (Council of Scientific and Industrial Research), has created a technology/process for generating biogas from organic wastes. Kitchen waste is one of the most versatile wastes generated on a daily basis. Also, food waste is a global problem. It is reported that one third of the food produced is being wasted. Most of the organic waste generated in the country is either dumped into landfills or given to piggeries. With this technology, food waste from canteen and vegetable/fruit peels from the kitchen can be used for the generation of biogas under the circular economy concept.
Some of the highlight features include the fact that this process is meant for hotels and canteens for the management of organic fraction of their waste, generated biogas can be used for cooking purpose directly or used for electrical energy distribution and the digestive can be used as organic manure. This technology is ready for commercialization with a TRL of 6.
