Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC) has developed a brushless DC motor based 5HP solar pump. The technology is available for licensing.
India has about 18 million agricultural pumps that take power from the grid. In addition, there are about 8 million diesel operated pumps. Solar-powered pumps are an attractive alternative.
The solar pumps sold in India today run on AC, but DC pumps are more efficient. Therefore, BARC’s BLDC pumps have a big market in the country. BARC will sell the technology for Rs 1.8 lakh.
BARC’s pumps have the following specifications:
  1. Single-stage, mono block, centrifugal pump driven by BLDC motor
  1. 5 HP/3.7 kW output power, which is the most used type in agriculture
  1. Motor efficiency around 92 per cent
  1. Head range 17 – 26 meters
  1. Flow rate 780 to 840 litres per minute.
