The Central Salt and Marine Chemical Research Institute (CSMCRI) has developed an engine worthy biodiesel as substitute to diesel. The food VS fuel debate can finally be put to bed with the possibility of utilizing unusable land of salt farm for cultivation.
The technology is highly cost-effective because of utilizing solar energy for biomass production with indigenous raw material & related intellectual property rights for production of oil-bearing Chlorella variables. Advantages include; dry sea as a substitute for the nutrients of sea water media for marine cultures, low energy requirement, raw materials indigenously available, harvesting auto-settled dry biomass of Chlorella variabilis for high energy efficiency and bio-refinery approach and scope of further improvisation. The process has been validated at pilot scale.
